One year on – becoming a Stop Hunger Charity Champion

In 2018, Defence & Government Services audit compliance manager, Mark Welshman, won the Stop Hunger Charity Champion award.
Stop Hunger relies upon the support of Sodexo employees from across the UK and Ireland. They give their time to organise fundraising events, volunteer with charity partners and promote Stop Hunger’s amazing work. A select few go on to become Charity Champions, leading Stop Hunger’s fight against hunger.
In less than one month, the Stop Hunger Awards will recognise one worthy Charity Champion who has shone brightly this past year. We caught up with Mark, 2018’s Charity Champion award winner, to see why the Stop Hunger Foundation is of such importance to him.
We started by discussing Mark’s values and commitment to social causes. Growing up, Mark’s role models were his parents, who were actively involved with their local Round Table and Ladies Circle groups – organisations that through social networking support charity fundraising through various activities and sponsored events.
When Mark had the opportunity to become a Stop Hunger Charity Champion, he knew that this was his time to make a real difference and actively help those who need it most.
“It has opened my eyes to the help some people really do need on a daily basis.”

Over the past six years, Mark has worked with his team and colleagues alike to raise thousands of pounds for Stop Hunger. In becoming a Charity Champion, he is increasingly aware of the impact the Stop Hunger Foundation can bring and the team building benefits it creates.
“Meeting the charity partners and finding out how we contribute to their needs has been a great source of inspiration. Raising money for Stop Hunger has not only benefitted the foundation and people in genuine need, but has also impacted our team, bringing everyone closer together and improving Team Spirit.”
Since winning the Charity Champion award, Mark has used this influence within Defence & Government Services to raise Stop Hunger’s profile and engage more Sodexo colleagues than ever before – even creating their very own recognition platform!
“We have introduced a contract specific annual Star Award for our front-line colleagues and site leads to reward significant contributions to Stop Hunger.”
This year the Stop Hunger Awards are back! The lucky award winners will be presented their awards at the 2019 Foundation Dinner in one months’ time. The celebration will take place at The Dorchester Hotel in London on 19 March.
The Foundation Dinner is a prestigious fundraising event that celebrates the success of the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation and recognises employee commitment to the Stop Hunger initiative over the past year.
