Best in class – National Apprenticeship Week 2019
This week is National Apprenticeship Week! Each day, we will be bringing you insights to celebrate apprentices across Sodexo UK & Ireland and encourage others to think about apprenticeships as a tool for career development.
Sodexo currently offer over 40 different apprenticeship programmes across the UK and Ireland. As the number of programmes we offer expand and the more apprentices join our business, the more our apprentices are recognised for being best in class.
At just 21, Matthew Young has been completing his Level 3 heating and ventilation service and maintenance apprenticeship for just over two years. As recognition for his hard work, he has been been recognised as JTL Local MES Winner for the West Midlands. This is part of Stage 1 of JTL’s National Awards programme. JTL is one of Sodexo’s approved hard FM training providers.
He was chosen as winner for exceeding expectations in the building services engineering sector, for demonstrating commitment to his own personal development and progression and for displaying inspirational qualities during his apprenticeship. A massive well done to Matthew!
Mathew is an employee of Sodexo Healthcare and is based at University Hospital of North Midlands. He joined Sodexo in 2016 as an apprentice after studying sports science at college – it just wasn’t for him!
“My apprenticeship is better than college I’m getting real experience and earning a wage. College is only two years, whereas with my apprenticeship, I’m getting three to four years to develop my skills.”
He was nominated for the award by his JTL trainer. As part of the award nomination process, Matthew had to submit a portfolio evidencing his work which includes liaising with clients and team leading. He has been positive about winning the award and recommends others to consider it as a way of starting a career.
“My apprenticeship has been really good – I can’t find fault with it. I have great time with lads at work and college which I go to for additional training every Thursday. I have had all the help I need and have asked for from Sodexo. I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship.”

Sodexo encourages recognition of apprentices who may have to balance work, learning and life all at the same time! As part of his win, Matthew will be awarded with a glass trophy and £50 cheque. Matthew will go on to the next stage of JTL’s National Awards with the selection of the Regional MES Winner for the Midlands – we wish Matthew all the best of luck and hope we can share some more good news soon…
Sodexo apprentices really are the best of the best. Another recent example of apprentices in the spotlight is rising star Julia Jewers, a commis chef apprentice from Independents by Sodexo (Sodexo Schools & Universities). Julia has made it through to the national heats of the Nestle Professional Toque d’Or competition after her apprentice made her feel more confident to apply for culinary competitions. You can read her story to success here.
As part of Sodexo’s 2019 National Apprenticeship Week celebrations, we are holding daily prize draws worth £50 for Sodexo employees who have taken the leap to register their interest in an apprenticeship. We will be announcing these daily on our blogs and social media, so if you have registered your interest, check back each day to see if you have won!
Today’s prize draw winner (6 March) is Cyril Gordet – thanks for registering Cyril and congrats on the win!
